Finding a cheap hotel in New York is not an easy task. As the city is one of the most visited in the world, even in low season prices are not very attractive.
Normally, when I need to get around this type of situation, I try to stay at hostels. I already wrote a review here on the blog about HI NYC, the best hostel in the region, and I thought the value for money was great.
This type of accommodation, however, is not everyone's choice. I know countless people who never they would accept sharing a room with strangers, even if it was to save hundreds of dollars.
With that in mind, on my last trip I looked for both hostels and hotels with reasonable prices so I could recommend them here on the blog. That's how I found the You can learn how to use the New York subway in this post.
The region is great and has several restaurants, sweet shops and shops. I had never stayed in this neighborhood and I really liked it.
The Jane Hotel – Everything about this cheap hotel in New York
The Jane building has been welcoming travelers since 1908, when it was a hotel for sailors passing through the city. It was there that the Titanic survivors stayed while waiting for the investigation into the accident to conclude, and where the remaining crew made a memorial in honor of those who did not resist (tragic, right?).
The facilities were restored in 2008, but maintained the original appearance of an old hotel. This is visible right at the entrance, where employees wear typical red uniforms with that “little hat“, and the reception is entirely made of wood, with carpets and shades of red. Even the elevator follows the theme vintage, with hands to indicate the floor.
On the ground floor there is also a restaurant called Old Rose, which also serves as a cafe and bar. Open from 7 am until the early hours of the morning, it serves breakfast and Italian cuisine for lunch, dinner and late night dining. There is also a bar in rooftop, but I can't say much about it because it was closed when I stayed there.

rooms
The rooms are inspired by luxury ships and train cabins, and were created to offer everything a guest could need in the smallest possible space. Don't expect large rooms, as this is not what the house proposes.
There are three types of accommodation: Standard Cabin, Bunk bed Cabin e Captain's Cabin, The first two do not have bathrooms on site, and you need to share them with the other guests on the floor. If this idea doesn’t appeal to you, it’s best to opt for a “captain's cabin".
I stayed in a Standard Cabin, which was just a 5m² room. The walls were decorated with wood, to give the impression of a train cabin. Apart from the bed, there was a small shelf under the window, a very large mirror on one of the walls, a television and space to put the suitcase under the bed. Everything is very well thought out and with the expected amenities.
Despite what Booking says, my room did not have air conditioning, just a fan. As it wasn't very hot, I didn't feel hot and didn't see much of a problem. The hotel also provides two free bottles of water for guests, as well as a bathrobe, towel and slippers to use in the communal bathrooms.
I really enjoyed the experience, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is claustrophobic or doesn't like tight spaces.. If you are traveling with two large suitcases, you may also lack space.
Bathrooms
How I stayed standard cabin, there was no bathroom in the room, and I had to use the communal ones that were on the floor. There were two of them, which were Great clean, more than once I saw the staff house keeping changing the trash or mopping.
Each of them has several cabins, and the ones for showering, in addition to being spacious, also had hooks for hanging belongings. Despite the hotel's old appearance, the showers were new and great, with very hot water and good pressure.
Despite there being many rooms and few bathrooms, I didn't have to queue for a moment. I don't know if it was because the hotel wasn't full or if all the rooms on the floor were individual, reducing the number of people.
My experience at The Jane Hotel
At the time I stayed at The Jane Hotel, the building's facade was under renovation, which made it a little difficult to locate. Upon entering the lounge, however, I was received very well by the staff, and the reception staff promptly checked me in and informed me how it worked to turn on the electricity in the room.
One thing that surprised me, despite having seen the photos in advance, was the hotel's similarity to the Tower of Terror ride at the Hollywood Studios park. The employees wore the same uniform, the pointer elevator and the decoration reminded me of the attraction and I confess that I was apprehensive for a few minutes. The sensation passed quickly, but I couldn't help but register my first impression.
I found all the facilities to be clean and well thought out, and I really didn't miss anything during my stay. They actually went above and beyond what was expected, providing free water, bathrobe and slippers.
As I only spent one day there, I took the opportunity to explore the region and already crossed out Chelsea Market and the High Line from my itinerary. If I had chosen to go to more distant places, however, it would also have been easy to take the metro.
I highly recommend this cheap hotel option in New York, and I would stay again on other occasions! If you're looking for more affordable accommodation, The Jane is worth a look!
