Central America

The only trip I've taken to Central America to date was to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. This was one of the calmest trips I've ever taken, as no visa or itinerary was required, considering that Punta Cana's biggest attraction is its variety of hotels. all inclusive.

Therefore, if you are looking for a destination to go on your own and few things can go wrong, I highly suggest visiting the place. Since I already had a valid passport, all I needed to do was buy the tickets, book the hotel and buy my travel insurance. The tourist tax is paid directly at immigration in US dollars.

Don't think, however, that choosing a hotel is easy. There are countless options and of the most different types: allowing children, adults only, swimming pools, close to the beach, a little further away, three, four or five stars... I stayed in Bavaro, one of the best beaches for swimming and with a super blue and calm sea, very typical of the Caribbean. My hotel was the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe, with a buffet, several restaurants, swimming pools, casino and even a nightclub.

At the time, the only trip I took outside the hotel (I needed to take advantage of all the free meals and other amenities, like mini golf!) was to the Hoyo Azul, a cenote that, as the name suggests, has extremely blue water. This was one of the most affordable attractions in the region (it's worth remembering that everything is paid in dollars), and I booked directly with the hotel. I also went to the mall, but the prices were much higher than those in the United States and I thought it wasn't really worth it.

If you are going on a trip to Punta Cana (or another destination in Central America), don't forget to take out travel insurance. This way, if you become ill or suffer an accident (something that easily happens when it comes to diving, boat trips or activities such as hiking and climbing) you will have specialized assistance and medical coverage. On this page you can answer ALL your questions about travel insurance and find out how to find reliable insurance at a great price.
