This last weekend I went to Curitiba to visit the Salão do Estudante, an event for those interested in studying abroad. The plan was to do a quick day trip, but I decided to spend the night there and see some tourist attractions the next day.
I did a quick search on Booking ordering by lowest price (#who never), and found the Social Hostel Café & Bar (Link). For me, it was the perfect place, as in addition to being affordable, the hostel was a 5-minute walk from where the lectures I wanted to attend would take place.
My experience was so good that I decided to open the hosting reviews category here on the blog. If you are looking for a place cheap and comfortable in the center of Curitiba, this review is for you!
The Social Hostel Café & Bar
I confess that I had a little trouble when I arrived, as I didn't figure out how to get in. Easily resolved, I called there and they came to open quickly. I was welcomed by Maria, who took the opportunity to teach me how to open the gate.
I filled out a quick registration, and she soon explained to me about the kitchen, facilities, how to get in after the door closes and what breakfast would be like (included in the daily rate) the next day.
Afterwards, Maria showed me the bedroom, bathroom and how everything worked, and gave me the keys to both rooms and mine. locker.
My first impression was that the place was super clean, well decorated and new. It lived up to all the photos and reviews on Booking.
Accommodation
When I made my reservation I chose a room with 6 beds for R$50, but I could have chosen one with 9 beds for R$39. Payment is made instantly, and they accept cards. Bed linen is complimentary, but towels are paid separately and cost R$4 for the length of your stay (not per night).
As I didn't know the size of the rooms, I was worried that the one with 9 beds would be too cramped, but the space is quite large and it would be comfortable to stay in it too. The two are mixed, there is no room option for women or men only.
My room had two trellises (is that a real word? Am I making it up? Do not know It really exists!), and each bed had its own light and socket, great for those who charge their cell phones frequently. The lockers were on the wall opposite the bed, and were very large, my backpack and other things fit easily. As they are closed with a key, there is no need to bring a padlock.
Each room has an individual bathroom, meaning only one person can use it at a time, but everyone has a key. I confess that I found it strange, since the other times I stayed in hostels they had those huge bathrooms with several showers.
But after that strangeness, I didn't have any problems. The bathroom was super clean and the shower worked great. The only tip is to check the temperature before taking a shower, as the shower is quite high and depending on your height you may need help to change between modes.
For those who like the hostel atmosphere but don't like sharing a room, Social Hostel also has two private suites, which can be rented on Booking for R$105 per night.
Common Areas and Breakfast
Reception
The reception has a counter that serves as both check-in and a bar, and even has a drinks refrigerator. There is also a TV that played music the entire time I was there, livening up the atmosphere, and several tables.
This part is really cool, because you can sit there talking to the people working at the reception and the other travelers who are staying. Furthermore, there is also a bookshelf full of books that you can take with you or read during your stay. When I get back I need to take some of mine and leave them there, I love this idea!
In the morning, in this same area, breakfast is served, which is delicious. There is bread, cheese, fruit, coffee and a very good cake made by Maria. When I went down to eat, she even asked me if I wanted scrambled eggs, very attentive. Coffee starts at 08am and goes until 10am, so there's no need to wake up So early to enjoy.
Kitchen and Patio
The kitchen has a refrigerator, stove, cabinets and utensils for anyone who wants to prepare or store their food. It just needs attention because it doesn't stay open all night, it closes and opens together with the reception.
The Social Hostel also has a very large patio at the entrance, great for catching some sun, chatting with the staff or enjoying the happy hours which they promote some nights.
My Experience
There's no denying that staying in a hostel is different from staying in a hotel. While in the second one you can just talk to reception at check-in/check-out and avoid other people, this doesn't happen in a hostel.
I confess that this is always the part that makes me nervous, because I'm not a person who brings up topics easily. But this was not a problem at Social Hostel.
The people who work there were very friendly to me, we talked a lot when I arrived, at night and at breakfast. I felt at home, super welcome and comfortable.
All the guests I met were also nice, and the next day I went sightseeing with some of them to see other parts of Curitiba. I ended up sleeping in a room with only boys, which in my head was “the worst possible scenario“, but even that part went smoothly after talking to them for a while.
And bonus: they have a very cute dog called Pepe who is one of the joys of the place. Just don't let him get close to your food hahaha.
For anyone looking for cheap and incredible accommodation in Curitiba, I recommend taking a look at Social Hostel Café & Bar. With a super friendly team, new environments and an incredible average rating of 9,5 on booking sites, it is a great request!
And remember that by making your reservation through our affiliate link on Booking, you not only guarantee the Lowest price as also help the blog with a small commission without paying anything extra that's why 🙂

Hi Alyssa, I'm glad you were well received at the Hostel in my city. I only stayed in a hostel in Madrid and I loved it. Here in Brazil, I'm a little wary of this type of accommodation. Although, several friends have already stayed like this in RJ and liked it. Good to hear another positive experience. Kisses
Hi Nicole!
This was my first hostel experience here in BR and it was very positive! I was also afraid but everything went well. Some of my friends also have great reports about hostels in Rj 🙂
Thanks for the comment <3
Congratulations Alyssa!! It's really cool that you can go alone and, on top of that, stay in a hostel, really admirable!! Keep it up, with adventures and always leaving your comfort zone, this is how we grow and mature!! Furthermore, congratulations on the post, very well written, descriptive and explanatory!!!!
A kiss
Own, thank you so much, you're beautiful <3

What a beautiful post Alyssa! Super detailed, I was impressed by his memory and care when describing the entire hostel and its operation to his followers. Now I know where to look for travel information! Congratulations! A big kiss and I miss you!
I'm glad you liked the post, Maria! When the place is so beautiful it's easy to remember everything! A kiss and see you next time 😀
I'm from Curitiba and I always go to Social...the happy hours they promote are awesome. I'm also going to say hello to Pepe and Maria Helena. <3
It's too much there, right? 😀 I didn't catch any Happy Hour this time, maybe next time!
I saw the photos on IG and loved them! Now, with the detailed instructions, I really want to go 🙂
It's super worth it! The price is great and the staff is awesome <3
